Now is the time for a new generation of European leaders. Politicians who dare to be “out there” with the people, and who dare to have dialogue, and connect in language that everybody can understand. People who want to and who can build bridges. Across rivers, between North and South. Between city and countryside. Between regions and the centres of power. Between Madrid and Gorredijk. People who are at home in Europe and who dare to say it, loud and clear. In the pub with the regulars, and around the negotiation table in Brussels. That is me. Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle.

Politicians who live far away from the centers of power unfortunately experience bigger barriers to become and remain politically active at the national and international levels. Simply from a financial point of view, it is not self-evident that everyone can fulfil their political ambitions. Participation in courses or travelling through the country during a political campaign to talk to voters costs time and money. Especially for candidates coming from Fryslân, Zeeland or Limburg. Political parties cannot or do not always want to reimburse these costs. The size of your own wallet helps define your chances. Even within D66. That can never be the intention.

On top of that, women are underrepresented in (European) politics, and especially women with young children. We are missing role models who show us that it IS possible for women to lead and succeed in politics. This is yet another reason why I am running in this election.

Do you want to know more about where exactly my money is going? I believe in full disclosure and that is why I publish all my campaign expenditure in this blog.
